Play is closely tied to a child’s growth in language, social skills, problem solving, and symbolic
thinking. It shows how children understand and interact with the world. If play is not developing as expected, it may signal delays in language, cognition, and/or social communication. A speech- language pathologist (SLP) can assess both play and language, and provide early intervention to build these skills. Sensory sensitivities, like hypo or hyper sensitivity to noise or textures, can make play more difficulty for some children.
