The key reason: variability!
Sometimes a blueberry is perfectly blue, cold, and round; sometimes it is not. Sometimes an avocado is green, room temperature and mushy; sometimes it is not. As adults, we are aware of this inconsistency in produce, and our level of cognition enables us to recognize this. However, to many children this variability is troublesome. A blueberry at school may be different from a blueberry at home!
Hence, foods like Goldfish, Wheat Thins, or Doritos often become preferred foods since their presentation is typically very consistent.

What is SOS feeding therapy? SOS is an evidenced-based and effective method to address problematic feeding behaviors, and to expand the number of foods a "picky eater" consumes. We will be one of the few speech-language pathology centers in the region to offer this program.
Who would benefit from this program?
⏺ A child with reduced or limited food intake: Child is described as an "extremely picky eater" or currently eats less than 20 different foods
⏺Child has eliminated all foods from one or more food groups (i.e. does not eat any vegetables)
⏺Child will only eat specific brands of food or has other rigid meal time behaviors such as only eating with a specific spoon, or only eating foods that are yellow
⏺Food selectivity by type, temperature, appearance and/or texture
⏺Food refusal resulting in poor weight gain
⏺Food or swallowing phobias

A quarter of young children in the United States are never read to. While this is an unsettling statistic, we can increase awareness of the importance of raising children in a literacy-rich environment.
▶️ Before reading with your child, try to reduce environmental distractions. Turn off the TV, silence your phone, and sit in an area that is generally quiet.
➡️ Offer your child a choice of 2 books to read. Hold both books up, and allow your child to point to/take the book he/she wants.
➡️ If it is a familiar story, pause at the end of the predictable sentence, allowing the child to fill-in the blank. For example, in Martin/Carle’s “Brown Bear” you might say, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you _______?” (See)
➡️ Model a positive attitude about books. Keep books not only in a dedicated play area, but throughout the home. It does not have to be expensive; make stops at the library. Give books as birthday gifts, talk about books during meals/car rides- indicating they are just as compelling a subject of conversation as the day’s events.

Preparing for ‘back to school’ means much more than simply stocking up on colored pencils and spiral-bound notebooks. It is often a time of new beginnings, new experiences, and for some parents, when they first realize something may be “wrong” with their child’s speech, language, reading or feeding abilities.
The first step is quite simple: go to the pediatrician. A child’s primary care doctor can conduct a basic screening of a child’s development and address parental concerns, while most likely easing worries with professional guidance. A pediatrician may next refer the child to a pediatric otolaryngologist and/or audiologist. The ENT and the audiologist can utilize their expertise to determine if the issues involved with speech and language could be related to a hearing problem.
Subsequently, a referral may be made to a speech-language pathologist for a comprehensive evaluation. There are myriad reasons why an evaluation conducted by a speech-language pathologist would be suggested, ranging from speech sound disorders to picky eating habits! A parent interview is first conducted to ascertain medical history, developmental milestones, and communication or swallowing concerns. Parental involvement is critical for a successful evaluation.
Depending upon the concern, the speech-language pathologist will analyze a child’s understanding and expressive use of various words, correct use of words in grammatically-appropriate sentences, pronunciation of age-appropriate speech sounds, voice quality, movement of structures utilized for speech production, and fluency of speech. Depending upon the age of the child, reading and written expression skills would be assessed as well. Formal, standardized evaluations are utilized in conjunction with informal methods. If feeding or picky eating is a concern, the speech-language pathologist would conduct a comprehensive swallow/feeding evaluation.
Findings are discussed at length with parent/guardian, and a thorough written report is furnished. The report will indicate recommendations for future action which may include participation in speech therapy, referral to another professional, and/or re-evaluation at a later date. While it may be more involved than picking up pencils or a notebook, this evaluation lays the foundation for your child’s back to school communicative experiences and overall success.
Please call our office at 239-631-1988 for more information regarding a comprehensive evaluation and/or speech therapy.
A picky eater differs from a problem feeder. A child with choking during mealtime, diagnosed with failure to thrive, and/or significant medical conditions is not a picky eater. A picky eater typically does not have significant developmental or medial issues. Generally, your child should consume between 15-20 different foods by age 3. Diversity of foods is critical as well; you want to ensure the child has at least 3 different foods in each food group (breads/grains, fruits, vegetables, meats) and are not specific to brand or color. At Speech By The Beach Consulting LLC in Naples, Florida, we provide comprehensive evaluation and evidence-based treatment for picky eaters (and problem feeders, too).
