A quarter of young children in the United States are never read to. While this is an unsettling statistic, we can increase awareness of the importance of raising children in a literacy-rich environment.
▶️ Before reading with your child, try to reduce environmental distractions. Turn off the TV, silence your phone, and sit in an area that is generally quiet. ➡️ Offer your child a choice of 2 books to read. Hold both books up, and allow your child to point to/take the book he/she wants. ➡️ If it is a familiar story, pause at the end of the predictable sentence, allowing the child to fill-in the blank. For example, in Martin/Carle’s “Brown Bear” you might say, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you _______?” (See) ➡️ Model a positive attitude about books. Keep books not only in a dedicated play area, but throughout the home. It does not have to be expensive; make stops at the library. Give books as birthday gifts, talk about books during meals/car rides- indicating they are just as compelling a subject of conversation as the day’s events.
